The Life and Times of a Guitarist

Garcia was an avid fan of rock and roll music, but it was being inspired by Hedrick that led him to get his first guitar. Like Paul McCartney around the same time, he was initially given the wrong instrument as a birthday present. In Garcia's case, his mother gave him an accordion, but he soon persuaded her to swap it for an electric guitar he saw in a pawn shop. And like his other contemporary, John Lennon, Garcia initially tuned his instrument incorrectly. He said later, when I started playing the guitar, believe me, I didn't know anybody that played. Nobody, they weren't around. There were no guitar teachers, you couldn't take lessons.
