The Enlightenment and Its Origins
The enlightenment is a coming together, or concatenation of lots of different currents of thought. And many of these ideas of freedom and equality actually came from native american societies. We think this has a lot to do with european notions of property and law. But it wasn't assumed as a matter of default, until roughly the eighteenth century, that humanity had everywhere existed in some primordial of equality. That's the new factor. The idea that er one can simply assume that equality was the original state.
