The Reconfiguration of Needs in the Age of Capitalism

You write that there's no real set of basic or authentic needs that we can return to in the name of sustainable consumption. What is your idea of need? What can be satisfied through consumption? How should we reconfigure that? It's a very central, it's a very key difficult question, very complicated one. I want to not suggest that it makes sense to argue for returning to the simple life. I mean, I don't think that's going to work. Nor do I think it is going to be really gratifying in the way that we potentially could evolve.
