Collisions Between Galaxies
In the early studies of galaxies, where people thought of these as like particles in a gas randomly moving around through the universe, the collision rate was extremely low. The reason that's not true is that our modern picture is that galaxyis basically gravitationally unstable. And this model seems to imply that these collisions between galaxies happen with some arity. So rather than being a rare event, this sort of merger is the basic building block in making the gallexes.
