Booker t washington was born into slavery in halesford, virginia on april fifth 18 56. Washington and his family gained their freedom under the emancipation shortly after. In his teen aged years, washington performed back breaking labor in the salt furnaces and coal mines of west virginia. Eventually saved up enough money to or tuition at hampton institute in virginia. He enrolled there in the fall of 18 72, and later proved to be such an exemplary student that he was asked to return as a teacher in 18 79.
