i think that is at least partly to do with e straight social circumstances. The mediaeval castle had a lot in common with the tudor court that men outnumbered women hugely. Courtly love was a kind of dream, a literary phantasy. But it reflected a real, a powerful, emotional reality. And i can easily believe that the women of the 12 thirteenth, fourteenth and subsequent centuries needed some sort of an outlet just as we would if they were us.
