The Faustian Pact With the Nazis
After 1945, the general German public is to construct an alibi for themselves and start again. Their promise, there's a sort of implicit promises made to the Allies. The deal is, look, help us help us rebuild and you will be safe in the knowledge that there is no forthright coming. And by 1949 and 1950, there is a sense of a sort of default amnesty. I do not believe there are millions of Germans going, oh, we got so close.
