How Did the Spanish Conquest in the Caribbean Affect the Native Population?
There were two main groups in Cuba who were living there when Europeans arrived, the most significant group came to be called the dinos. The population was reduced by as much as 90%, some estimates go as high as 95%. They bore the brunt of European diseases, of European warfare, of demands for labor, of hunger and suicide. There was an enormous amount of indigenous suicide in response to the hopelessness of the conquest.
