The Unwritten Rule of Shelter
In the Cold War, there was no provision for shelters at all. The unwritten rule was that if it does happen in Britain, you're done for. There's no reliable protection. If you want a shelter, by all means buy one or build one, but there will be no official provision by the government. We did toy with the idea of a fallout shelter. And that would be buildings which aren't expected to survive blast. But if one does, and if it is third day, and has a basement area, then,. by all means, you can rush down into there and shelter there for two weeks until the fallout decreases. That was quite a popular thing in the 50s
