Teaching Reading Comprehension Strategies
In 2000, there was this report issued by a blue ribbon panel called the national reading panel. It endorsed things like systematic phonics instruction. But one of the things they endorsed was teaching reading comprehension strategies. They found evidence that teaching certain reading comprehension strategies could boost comprehension. Only 15% of teacher training programs included comprehension instruction as part of their curriculum. 10 years later that went from 15% to 75%.
