The two men entered the marathon from South Africa had served as messengers in the Boer War. The temperature was 32 Celsius, 90 Fahrenheit and it was to be run on a dusty unpaved road. Cars with runners, coaches and their doctors would drive alongside the runners kicking up tons of dust.
