I think trend following in practice is very contrarian, especially at those key inflection points. When gold first started to go up in 2002 it was met with such apathy and skepticism by virtually all investors. And I'm noticing the same thing now. A gold has entered a downtrend; some of the emerging markets have entered a downt trends. There's a whole bunch of new trends that just got started in the past six months that are being met with apathy and skeptical.
