The Necronomicon and the Witch Coven

The Necronomicon is in the wind and as you've discovered over the centuries, it somehow makes its way across the Middle East and into Europe. And then someone puts it on a ship which docks in Dönig. The Witch Coven, who collected the book at Dönig, clearly didn't know what they were doing. So, those witches were flying blind. According to legend, they attempted a ritual from the book. And Dönig got wiped off the map. That would be the notion that people attempting the rituals laid out in the book are creating breaches in the fabric of reality and letting monsters through.
