In the First World War conscientious objectors were stigmatized and harassed. In WWII, attitudes towards conscientious objectors changed a great deal. Many of them began to realize that in a world mobilized for war there was no space outside it. They had most difficulty with themselves wondering whether they were doing the right thing.
