The Backlash to Spectacle

Queen Victoria is a really interesting case, isn't she? Because after the death of Prince Albert, she retreated from public life. But that had a negative impact on her popularity. The people felt that perhaps they weren't getting their monies with from her as a monarch. And for Queen Victoria, yes, this withdrawal, even though they didn't want the kind of huge lavish spectacle, they needed to see that their monarch was present and connected to them.
