When samuel peeps, the famous seventeenth century diarist, was appointed to office at the restoration of the monarchy in 16 60, he was told that it was what you could gain from your office that was important. So his diary gives us a fascinating glimpse into the cultural ways in which people thought about corruption. And i think there's another way in which it seem as systemic, because one of the other developments over this period is asort of separation of rolls so there was increasing recognition that if you held more than one type of office simultaneously, you were more likely to be corrupt.
