How Did CERN Discover the Higgs Boson?

The discovery of the Higgs boson wasn't like an aha moment. Like one day, boom, here it is. We found it. There it is. You can all see it. So it was sort of a slow burn. At some point it passes some threshold or statisticians say we are allowed to say we've discovered the Higgs Boson. And so huge fanfare, lots of excitement, lots of like news coverage in the media.
