The Struggles of American Nurses to Establish Nursing as an Academic Discipline

After World War II, nursing faced a crisis. The regimented procedure-based training of hospital-based diploma programs that had predominated in nursing education before the war was inadequate. So beginning in the 1950s, nurse educators introduced the Bachelor of Science in Nursing or the BSN. And this new model of undergraduate nursing education really emphasized science-based learning and clinical thinking.
