In World War II, you can't get around it if you talk about Europe, East in Europe and Ukraine in particular. The formation of today's borders of Ukraine is very much the resultant outcome of World War II. And the next would be the follow the Soviet Union, disintegration of the USSR in 1991. That is by far, I would say maybe the most important piece of history that one has to take into account looking at this war.
