The Turks were, during World War one came to power and started this kind of, uh, Turk no centric, nationalist ideology. They took the young and the intellectuals in the Armenian community on April 24th of 1915, wiping them out then starting a systematic purge. There are various estimates have it at one and a half million Armenians that were wiped out.
