Tribunals would assume conscience had to take on a Christian Protestant form. Many pacifists or many consciences rejected were both political and religious they didn't see that there was a difference between them. The overwhelming sense you get from his letters as well as accounts from some of the soldiers who were imprisoned with with him was of the mutual respect and interest partly because he and other people like him had been willing to get their hands dirty one way or another.
