In the conclusion of your book, you write that massive abstraction still abound in our debates. Yet such large-scale abstractions have proven remarkably unhelpful in the controversies of our day. I think that relates to some extent to the kind of professional location and also the sort of personal psychology of many of the people that are offering the critiques. And this is partly why it's an account that's in some ways anchored on a community of professional intellectuals.
