In the 1890s, nursing is still a relatively new profession. Earlier in the century, nurses weren't well respected. They had a reputation for being drunken and uneducated. It's only after the American Civil War that nursing starts to become a proper job. We travelled to Boston to meet Dr Elizabeth DeWolf, Professor of History at the University of New England.
