For a first century jew the imagery wouldn't have been novel. They're describing, you know, empires, like beasts andthere. This was not only the stuff that they were familiar with from the tana, but also from other jewish literature at the time. So i think once we get the imagery out of the way, a the gist of the message is really straightforward.
