In this country you don't just go to jail for being poor. But what makes your book such an eye opener is people go to jail just for being poor all the time. And unlike people of means, can't just write a check to make the problem go away. The judges use pretectuala reasons to say that, well, we're not really putting you in debtors prison. We're putting you in jail cause you missed a hearing.
