The Importance of Mind Games in the Big Tours

It is interesting, isn't it though, this theme of breakaways not succeeding in the biggest races. We saw last year a bit of a pattern whereby there were times, particularly in grand tours, where one would have expected breakaways to be caught. It does feel as though over the last two or three years, the rulebook has been rewritten slightly about how you stay away. And it feels as though there are more mind games involved now, rather than simply being a question of the number of watts in the peloton versus the number ofawatts in the break.
