Defector Deborah Layton described the first time the people voted to commit a mass suicide. "We were told that the liquid contained poison and that we would die within 45 minutes" The People's Temple received monthly packages of cyanide, varying each time from a quarter pound to half pound in size. In order to legally buy vast quantities of cyanide Jones had to procure a jeweler's license.
