I think every single thing we have done in our lives to survive has been adaptive. And if we are only so focused on the excavation or excising of that behavior, then we lose the function of what this behavior is serving to protect. In my teenage years, I had self-harmed as a primary way of coping with a lot of chaos and complex trauma. So it's like the function of it shifted, but the shame didn't. It was another few decades of really working through and understanding why I do these things.
