The Random Assignment of a Judge in the Mar-a-Lago Trial
How did this judge end up supervising, exercising oversight over the Mar-a-Lago investigation and then presiding over the trial as well? It seems that it was a random assignment that is how things work in the Southern District of Florida. They don't have a rule that allows for automatic assignments to judges who have worked on related matters. But because the special master litigation has been closed since December, I think it's unlikely that that process is what led to canon being assigned to the case.
