The Culture of Manuscript Production in the Middle Ages
In early Middle Ages, the relatively few people who could read and write tended to be members of the church literacy went with religion. This lies to both Christianity and Judaism, which of course existed throughout all of medieval Europe. By the late Middle Ages, probably most books are generally not religious or not so much so. There's history, there's music, there's all the classics, every classical text we have survives through a medium of a manuscript.
