Syracuse's ancient history is second only to Rome, I'd say. Ravenna in northern Italy was influential for having a number of different people take it. From being this seat of power for the Western Roman Empire, it fell into Byzantine hands. And then it was endowed with all these glorious buildings that still stand and these amazing examples of early Christian art and architecture.
