The Rise of Racism in West Eurasia
The plague may have reinvigorated the slave trade and perhaps also led to the rise of racist attitudes. The first Portuguese attempts to take slaves in the Canary Islands or at least the first sustained ones take places early as the 1360s. Racism is a way in which settlers people who take the huge risk of going overseas can say well actually we're still as English or as Spanish or as Portuguese as you are because race transfers much more easily than environmental factors or institutional factors.
