At Bell Labs, I was used to sort of thinking I'm going to live or die on my own skill. And so when I came to Goldman, this is in 1985, there were maybe five or six or seven thousand people there. It was actually very entrepreneurial in a good way. They had a very intellectual environment, at least for people like me. So it was actually quite wonderful because I felt like a real trader leaving physics in 1980 and leaving things that I liked.
