It was very much the establishment view at the time. The idea that some oics from Liverpool could be self-evidently so much more talented than people who had gone, had the right backgrounds and were from the right families really blew a fuse in their minds. It really sort of sabotaged their entire worldview. And so when the Beatles were given MBEs, that was a really strong political act by Harold Wilson,. it sent quite a message.
