The Legend of Gawain
Gawain, the king's nephew, had quickly become a favorite. The green knight said that he wanted to play a game where someone would strike him with his massive green axe and any year plus one day, the green knight would get to return exactly that blow. Gwen didn't like the idea of the King of Green to have an axe brought down on his neck in a year. But then Arthur stepped up inspired him. Gawain accepted what the young woman asked; Merlin did ask that he swear in holy relics that he would always grant a knight mercy if the knight asked for it. He was allowed to go free and sand severed head hanging around his neck.
