The Importance of Colonialism
Many parts of the world have very strong matrilineal traditions in which women have historically had a lot of authority. European colonialism was to export a rigid idea about what women were, the roles of men and women. So we have to remember that this history is as much a vehicle of patriarchy as what happened thousands of years ago. We can see the imposition of patriarchy in our own lifetimes because people are still living through it.
