H.D. Wells' Time Machine by H2Os
The Time Machine by H2Os is so important. It came out in 1895, and was immediately kind of considered a work of genius. And he was on his way immediately writing an extraordinary sequence of books which are very influential on science fiction after that. But it is very distinctly a portrait of London in the 1890s. So although he travels forward 800,000 years on his machine, what he's describing in that future society is a classical division between the capitalist workers who live underground,. these feral creatures who've devolved back into forms of monkey or spider.
