Holidays and the Industrial Revolution

When did most working people get enough time off and when was there a conception that you would use this leisure time to go on holiday? Well traditionally the working man's holidays were entirely at the whim of his employer. As the industrial revolution got going those were whittled away because more and more working people went into factories, one ran on much stricter lines. The statutory paid holidays of any longer period didn't come in until 1938 so just before the second world war um and before then you might have had two weeks off a year but you had to pay for your own holiday.
