The Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica
The Sugar Duties Act of 1846 changed the way British Caribbean sugar was produced. It made it cheaper to buy from Britain than Brazil or Cuba, which still had thriving sugar industries. The act also led to political struggles as people of African descent were starting to be able to participate in local politics and legislative politics. This caused concern for those who did not believe that black people should be political actors.
