Psychiatry is moving away from psychoanalysis toward a biomedical model of mental illness. The shift begins in the early 70s when American Psychiatric Association starts working on a revision to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual number two. PTSD is one outlier because it's the only place where you have etiology still, which is cause.
