The Importance of Competition in Colleges

As an economist, I'm puzzled why we don't have more competition when each of these universities aggressively compete for the best students. Students hate having lousy teachers, but they're not choosing a school based on how good they think the teachers are. Kids who go to selective liberal arts colleges may care more or well, they probably care about a certain kind of communal experience where they are having more contact with teachers. But that sector is quite small.
