The Evolution of Politics
Our very distant forager ancestors, they had a very egalitarian and even democratic political style. In the last few hundred years, we've had an increased taste for at least the appearance of ordinary people having some degree of influence over the government. That recent change is plausibly not because people suddenly discovered that democracy was possible. It plausibly changed because human preferences change as we get rich. And plausibly, we move back toward forager styles as we get richer, because the pressures that turned us into farmers don't feel as compelling.
