Today's big tech dominance over AI research echoes the US military's control over science during the Cold War. Big tech for a long time had business models that were not largely reliant on military spending. Now they join the ranks of those old-school contractors, securing a growing share of profits from the military-industrial complex that allowed for their rise in the first place.
