In psalm 23, the man descends into the valley of the shadow of death. He has guide, a shepherd, a sage, to initiate him and make sure that he makes it through. But i want you to think our culture to day. Do we have male initiators, especially older men? No. What do we have? Boys are raised predominantly by women, their mothers. Oftentimes they can even be good women. Men need discent and trials so severe that they purify the soul. And this is what's hard for us to hear, sometimes, we need trials that are so difficult that they drive sin kedness and the lack of virtue from us
