The first cell phone call was made on April 3, 1973 in New Jersey. It took 10 years before the FCC would approve a commercial version of cellular technology. In 1983, the first commercial cell phone network was finally opened to the public. That handset measured 10 inches tall, 14 if you include the antenna, and weighed almost 2 pounds.
