The Trial of the Century
In the 1920s, individual states began to ban books. The book that mentioned the theory of evolution was removed from shells in public schools. A 25-year-old school teacher by the name of John Scopes,. was arrested, handcuffed, and carted off to jail for violating the new law. Well, the great Clarence Darrow in Chicago read about it; he was incensed. He volunteered to defend Scopes for free, spending his own money to handle the case. Leading the prosecution team was Darrow's nemesis, William Jennings Bryant who helped the laws get passed.
