The Importance of Talking to People on the Ground
West Germany still constitutionally banned women from taking up any role in the atmosphere that wasn't to do with either music or the medical sphere. In East Germany, due to socialist ideology around women being sort of part of society as it were on all levels, they started to integrate lots of women into the army. So this is just one example of where you have a political decision and most of the time historians focus on that - but actually what that means for people on the ground emotionally only really becomes apparent when you talk to these people.
