Hai Rei Dismissed From Office
The department secretary to the Ministry of Revenue, a guy who hailed from Hainan by the name of Hai Rei, well known for his devotion to the emperor. He did a bold thing one day and wrote a memorial to the jajing emperor, requesting him to be more open to advice from his ministers. For this he was thrown into prison and languished there until the emperor died in 1567. And he went on to also serve the next two emperors, Long Ching and Wan Li. 400 years later, there was a play written about Hai Rei, who historians had held up as a model of the quintessential, honest, loyal, and dedicated civil servant.
