The Late Dynastic Slog of the Ming

Montiu successes in the northeast adversely affected government's campaigns against rebels. During 1637 and 1638, there'd been a considerable optimism that the rebel problem would soon be solved. Ming forces brought substantial pressure to bear on rebel groups operating in Xiong Xi, Hanan, and Hukwang. The still-obstent rebel leader, Li Zeteng, spent most of the next two years rebuilding his shattered forces. Both Li and fellow outlaw chief Zhongh hailed from small communities in northern XiongXi.
