Gran Canaria was at the key turning point of the new world in the 17th century. The seas around the Canary Islands were infested with pirates. There were a lot of Barbary raids on villages in Cornwall, Devon and Italy. And most of the coastal villages in Lanzarote and Fotov and Tura were completely empty of people by this stage.
